Join zinester, artist, and academic Bryce Galloway for a hands-on zine-making workshop. Whether you're new to zines or already immersed in DIY publishing, this workshop is a space to explore how personal writing can shift from private reflection into a creative, shareable form.
Many zines begin the same way journals do, as fragments of daily life, observations, sketches, and unfiltered thoughts. In this hands-on workshop, you will receive prompts from Bryce, and each participant will contribute a page to a collective zine that you can take home at the end. Use the skills you learn to continue working on your own individual zine in the future.
All materials are provided, and your ticket includes a copy of Bryce’s brand new book, Zines NZ: Punk to Present. This richly illustrated exploration of Aotearoa’s zine culture traces the scene from its 1980s punk origins through to today’s vibrant communities, preserving voices that are often fleeting, personal, and hard to archive.
What is a zine?
A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a noncommercial, often homemade or digital publication typically focused on niche or unconventional topics. Lo-fi and personal, zines are usually produced in small batches by passionate creators. They exist in a unique space between private diary and public storytelling - a way to give shape to perspectives that might otherwise remain unseen.
About the tutor
Bryce Galloway is a long-time zinester whose publication Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People is Aotearoa’s longest-running zine. Known for its diaristic writing and playful, hand-drawn style, his work exemplifies how journal-like material can become compelling, shareable art. Bryce is also a founding member of the Kirikiriroa Hamilton Zinefest, part of the Wellington Zinefest team, and a Fine Arts lecturer at Massey University’s School of Art.
