It’s amazing how few words it takes to sketch a vivid character—but which words, and where do you put them? Using examples from both fiction and memoir, Dan Keane will show you how to write a portrait that lives and breathes on the page.

About your teacher
Dan Keane writes the newsletter american.nz. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, Harper’s, Newsroom, The Spinoff, North & South, McSweeney’s, and The Best American Nonrequired Reading, among others. He's been the Bolivia correspondent for The Associated Press, taught writing at NYU Shanghai and the University of Michigan, and is now a PhD candidate at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington.
