Introduction to Book Making: Nesting Notebooks

Create a set of Matryoshka Notebooks (nesting notebooks) in this fun and playful class inspired by the famous nesting dolls that fit inside each other, getting smaller and smaller.

Liz will guide you step-by-step to create a set of four, card-covered notebooks that are completely unique to you. 

Liz first created the Matryoshka Book Project for her book, Re:Create, and many students worldwide have since enjoyed it. As part of the class you will receive a signed copy of Re:Create to take home and keep learning from.

The skills you establish in this class will stay with you, enabling you to make unique and personalised books for yourself, your friends and family for years to come.

Everything is provided and there will be plenty of materials to choose from. However, if you have some special materials of your own - handmade papers, stickers, or old books - that you would would like to incorporate into your notebooks, you are very welcome to bring those along on the day. 

No previous bookmaking or bookbinding experience is needed - but you'll get a bit of an introduction to both!

This workshop is suitable for creative souls aged 12 and upwards. No experience needed.


This workshop is presented as part of the The New Zealand Stationery Festival.

You do not need to purchase a ticket to the Stationery Festival in order to attend this event, but it is highly recommended that you do. Attendees without a Stationery Festival ticket will not receive a tote bag, and will only have access to Cobblestones 15 minutes before the class begins. 

Do not worry if you can't get a time-entry ticket for the Festival that is before your class begins - if you have a class ticket AND a Festival ticket we will honour whichever is the earliest. 

About your teacher

Liz Constable runs Book Art Studios where she blends her love of storytelling with her passion for bookmaking to create handmade books cherished by collectors all over the world.  

A self-taught book artist and author of six published books, including ‘Dyed & Gone to Heaven’ which reflects her love of experimenting with dye and paper to see ‘what happens if’.

A natural born teacher, Liz makes learning fun and loves to take her students (in both online and in-person classes) on creative adventures, inviting them to explore creative paths with her, simply to see where they lead.

Venue

Our venue is inside Cobblestones Museum. The paths to the classroom are stone-chip but the workshop space is on the ground level. 

Tickets

$89.90 per person - includes a copy of Liz's book, Re:Create.

Tickets will be available from Eventfinda starting Thursday, September 24th, 2026.

Refund policy

Due to the bespoke nature of these classes and limited capacity we do not offer refunds. You are however welcome to pass your ticket onto someone else if you can't attend. You can also contact us to see if we have a waitlist for sold out classes and if we do, we'll put you directly in touch to arrange ticket transfer.
