In this autobiographical masterpiece Shirley Jackson skewers the trials of domestic life in 1950s America with wry wit and uncanny precision. Her four offspring have grown into fully-fledged demons. Their house starts to burst at the seams yet the Jackson clan somehow manage (without really planning it) to move into a larger home. With them they also manage to move the chaos, absent furniture, vanishing children, misbehaving refrigerators, an avalanche of books.

Shirley Jackson was born in San Francisco in 1916. She first received wide critical acclaim for her short story 'The Lottery', which was published in 1949. Her novels are characterised by her use of realistic settings for tales that often involve elements of horror and the occult. Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages are her two works of nonfiction.

Paperback.
